Cleaner Production Definition
Cleaner Production is;
The continuous application of an integrated preventive environmental strategy applied to processes, products, and services to increase overall efficiency and reduce risks to humans and the environment.(United Nations Environment Programme)
Rather than control of pollution, cleaner production concept is about the prevention.
It questions the need for a particular product and looks at other ways to satisfy the demand.
Cleaner production activities such as pollution prevention, source reduction, waste minimization, and eco-efficiency involve;
- Better management
- Good housekeeping,
- Substitution of toxic and hazardous materials,
- Process modifications,
- Onsite recovery or reuse of waste products.
- Production of useful by-products
- Equipment modification
- Technology change
The eventual goal of cleaner production is to achieve a ‘closed-loop’ operation in which all excess materials are recycled back into the process.
